Wilderness along the River

Along the stretch of Danube between Vienna and Bratislava, the mighty river still has the power to create new habitats: floods change the structure of the river's edge, new gravel banks and islands emerge, and forests are carried away and then reborn. The dynamic nature of the river is unique to Central Europe and exceptionally valuable. The Danube wetlands east of Vienna are home to the last remaining wilderness along the river.

Since 1996, this area has been protected by national park status, and the Danube is its main artery. For more than 36 kilometres, the river is able to flow freely. Aside from the Wachau region, it is the last free-flowing stretch of the Danube in Austria.

The film "Wilderness Along the River - Donau-Auen National Park" is a coproduction of ORF and Interspot Film in association with the Donau-Auen National Park, and investigates the new, old wetlands and the constant process of change that allows this area to survive.
