Claus is at the peak of his career. He is allowed to represent his home country, the GDR, at the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck. All those years of hard and inhumane training, optimized with forced doping, were not in vain. But when his coach condemns him due to political influenceto losing the competition, his collar bursts. Claus escapes from the team hotel and goes into hiding in Austria. After a few days the secret state police of the GDR track him down and bring him back to the GDR. He is given a choice: either he publicly repents and apologizes for this "mistake" or he must leave his home, his friends and family, forever.
When Claus decides on the second choice, the system of the totalitarian state begins to work in the background: it is to be prevented by all means that Claus ever again has success, in whatever country.
Against all odds and political influence, Claus becomes part oft he Austrian ski jumping team. Soon he is nominated to compete in the Nordic Ski World Championships in Lahti (Finland). As he even is considered a gold medal favorite, the GDR officials become nervous. The pressure on Claus must be increased.
And suddenly during his first jump at the championships his ski-binding opens as if by magic, he loses his ski and takes a heavy fall. Just a coincidence?
